A shared public fear in the Territory is that the United Kingdom Government would take over and impose direct rule. In fact, as recent as last week, the comment was made by a Member of the House of Assembly. However, His Excellency, Governor Augustus Jaspert has rubbished such notion.

When a member of the media mentioned the concern to the Governor at a sit-down on May 23, the Governor chuckled as he responded, “That always seems to be the response. Yea, people always jump to that conclusion, all the time.”

Nonetheless, His Excellency did not dwell or dive deeply into the constant mention that the UK will or plans to impose direct rule. Instead, he alluded to the point that the BVI has autonomy and therefore certain aspects of rule is within the control of the local Government, and the House of Assembly.

In bringing this point across, the Governor said, “The key thing to think about is how the institutions here work in the British Virgin Islands, and work most effectively. So, since I’ve gotten this comment, I’ve always said this…the Governors, when they leave, they hand over notes to their successors.”

These notes, the Governor said, reinforces the Governor’s role in overseeing good governance and working with the Government to better the Territory.

He also touched on the fact that persons in the community always look to the UK and the Governor to intervene in various territorial matters.

“The people always say what’s the UK going to do or what’s the Governor going to do; it’s the wrong question,” Governor Jaspert said.
